Energy in the Digital Age: Part II
White Papers
Stifel IRIS is pleased to release the second part of its latest white paper “Energy in the Digital Age: Empowering Physical Infrastructure with Data Intelligence,” a comprehensive investigation into the technological and structural transformation reshaping the global energy sector and the emerging opportunities within the transition to a fully electrified future.
We are currently witnessing a historic shift in how we power our lives, but our physical infrastructure is struggling to keep up. In Europe, 40% of the power grid is now more than 40 years old, leading to massive "traffic jams" in our wires that cost the system over €4 billion in 2023 alone. To fix this and connect the millions of new solar panels and electric cars coming online, Europe needs to invest €600 billion by 2030 to modernize its networks.
In the second part of our white paper, we explore the rise of a "Software-Defined Grid," where energy is managed with the same precision as data on the internet. For over a hundred years, the power grid worked like a simple water faucet—we just turned it on or off. Today’s world of unpredictable wind and solar power requires a radical transformation, moving away from legacy hardware toward a high-speed digital platform that can balance energy supply and demand every second of the day.
This transition marks a move toward "systemic intelligence," where utilities use real-time data to prevent outages and optimize capital expenditure. Investors are now looking beyond the physical poles and wires to the digital "brains" that allow the grid to think for itself. By 2030, 70% of all renewable energy will be connected at the local level rather than at large central plants, making this digital coordination the only way to keep the lights on reliably. In this new paradigm, value is no longer created solely by physical infrastructure, but by the intelligence that orchestrates it, opening up a new generation of opportunities across the energy landscape.
